Université Jean Monnet Saint-Étienne (UJM) is a world leader in artificial intelligence, computer vision and industrial vision and is working on the RETURN project. UJM is the main partner for Work Package 2: Analysis, Sorting, Separation, and Batching. Located in the heart of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, UJM is renowned for its cutting-edge research in optical engineering, computer vision, and machine learning.

In the complicated world of electronic waste, “knowing what you have” is the first step to recovering it. UJM is developing the advanced “eyes” of the RETURN process. These are sophisticated multi-sensor identification systems that combine visual (VIS), near-infrared (NIR), X-ray transmission (XRT), and 3D technologies. These systems don’t just see waste; they understand it.

UJM’s technology uses special computer programs (called “deep learning algorithms”) based on  “convolutional neural networks” (or CNNs) and “transformers” architectures to identify specific components, read serial numbers, and even detect the atomic composition of materials as they happen. This AI technology allows the RETURN system to instantly categorize items for reuse, repair, or specific chemical recycling. UJM’s work makes sure that the chemical processes downstream receive pure, optimized batches of material, which maximizes efficiency and minimizes waste.
