Teenage researchers from Liverpool Life Sciences UTC align with EU-funded e-waste targets at annual Business of Science conference in Nottingham. 

NOTTINGHAM, UK — Representatives from the EU – funded RETURN project have commended a team of secondary school researchers from Liverpool Life Sciences UTC for their exceptional project addressing the global electronic waste crisis. 

Attending the annual Business of Science conference – created by Steve Bennett to bridge research, commercialization, and future industry talent – the RETURN team discovered a student exhibition that independently mirrored core strategic objectives of the multi-million-euro European sustainability initiative.  

UK Student Innovators for Circular Economy Project Nottingham

The student team – comprising Maryam, Eeshah, Parimah, Samaa, and Maddie – developed a research poster tackling global e-waste aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Their findings independently identified key circular economy strategies that align directly with RETURN’s mission, including: 

  • AI-assisted material identification to streamline recycling processes. 
  • A digital marketplace for pre-owned electrical items and components. 
  • Conservation of finite resources currently discarded in landfills. 
  • Targeted reductions in raw material mining and environmental contamination. 
  • Public health awareness highlighting specific groups impacted by toxic e-waste. 

“In our relentless news cycles and clamouring social media feeds, it’s easy to miss the positive things happening around us,” said Chris Hare of Iconiq Innovation, representing the RETURN project team. “Seeing secondary school students independently map out the exact challenges and goals we are tackling across Europe was remarkable. They nailed every strategic pillar – the only missing piece was our proprietary green solvent technology.

The RETURN project’s breakthrough technology utilizes sustainable, non-toxic Deep Eutectic Solvents (DES) to recover valuable critical metals from complex e-waste streams, bypassing the toxic chemicals and high energy usage required by traditional smelting. 

Connecting Industry and Education 

Liverpool Life Sciences UTC – the first school in the UK specializing in science and healthcare for 14-to-19-year-olds – has attended The Business of Science conference since 2017. School teams set out to produce practical solutions to real-world issues, frequently entering the event’s innovation awards to earn funding for ongoing STEM initiatives.
