OSAI Automation System (OSAI)

Transforming e-waste processing with high-speed robotics and industrial scalability.

OSAI Automation System S.p.A. Società Benefit (OSAI) participates in the RETURN project as a co-partner responsible for Automated Handling & Depanelling. OSAI operates worldwide in the design and production of machines and complete lines for automation, laser technology systems, semiconductor testing and the electronics industry. Osai can be identified in the market as a solution provider in process automation for product lines that operate mainly in sectors with high technology content and through a cross-technology portfolio.

In 2022, Osai Automation System set up Osai Green Tech Società Benefit S.r.l., a new company whose mission is to bring industrial automation to the world of recycling, from the application of our technologies in reverse, therefore disassembling and separating.

The company’s GreenTech division is responsible for creating the physical infrastructure needed for a circular economy. In the RETURN project, OSAI is responsible for engineering the advanced mechanical systems that disassemble, sort, and batch electronic waste.1 OSAI’s high-speed robots work together with UJM’s AI vision systems. They perform delicate operations, such as removing valuable components from circuit boards, at a speed and scale that manual labor cannot match.

OSAI’s involvement makes sure that RETURN’s solutions are not just theoretical but also strong and useful in industry. Their “Società Benefit” status shows that they are legally committed to having a positive social and environmental impact, which is exactly what RETURN’s mission is: to secure Europe’s critical resources. OSAI is making e-waste processing a high-tech, precise industry. It is doing this by automating the recovery of critical raw materials. In the pilot phase, it can process 75 kg per hour.

Key Contributions to RETURN

5

Robotic Disassembly

Deploying automated systems (laser de-panelling, mechanical grippers) to separate high-value components without damage.

5

System Integration

Building the physical interface between AI sorting and chemical recycling, creating a unified pilot module.

5

Industrial Scale-up

Ensuring all mechanical processes meet the throughput requirements of a commercial facility, enabling rapid replication post-project.
